Hillocks of swirls of buttery cream…Mmm! I do not have a sweet tooth. I have sweet teeth. I’m thrilled with the latest cupcake and macaron craze that has hit Mumbai. Cupcakes are time-machines, they instantly transport us back to childhood. So you can imagine my delight when I go on a tasting-sugar-high with the incredibly young, energetic and beautiful two some Tara Sutaria and Khurshed Mogrelia, both foodies, chocoholics, singers and dancers. We taste non-stop and both will work it off at their vigorous dance rehearsal for Raell Padamsee’s musical, while I lazily totter onto eating more…all three patisseries are new but crowded, open through the day and all offer cupcakes, macarons, pastries, desserts in a variety of colors, flavors, frostings…you name it.
Le 15 Patisserie
Several years ago when I was filming in Paris’s “Le Cordon Bleu” and the only Asian student they referred to and were proud of was Pooja Dhingra. Justifiably too. The passionate perfectionist has not only kicked off the macaron trend in Mumbai but ensures that her patisseries have a constant supply of the freshest of cakes, cupcakes, éclairs, tarts and truffles. Choux pastry, plump with cream is her latest must-try addition. I recommend it as I do her two super-hits the dark chocolate macaron and the luscious red velvet cupcake.
I buy patisserie for almost Rs 4000 and send it back with Tara and Khurshed who are leaving for their rehearsals. Chocolate cupcakes and eggless chocolate cupcake get top votes from the cast. We love the pale pink and white cute little store (white picket fence, seating and a coffee machine too). My only crib is the caramel salt macaron (usually my most favorite) has no briny punch.

Colorful beanbags to lounge on alfresco, dark black exterior and ceiling here. An array of colorful cupcakes , pastries ( carrot, red velvet, Oreo cookie, strawberry, pina colada, and chocolate) here. Tabassum Hassan’s brand new patisserie serves savory croissants, quiches too. Since my globe-trotting gourmet and businessman friend Safdar Bandukwala and I are here on a sweet trip we try only these. Our verdict: chocolate pastries here are better than the cupcakes. You can also make your own cupcake. These are offered in mini and large sizes.

LOVE, SUGAR, DOUGH
Sure has to be a LSD trip…neon blue, mithai pink, lime green…not only are the interiors enrobed in these colors even the pastries and cakes are. LSD has two patisseries and both are crowded. Safdar asked for making his own “cupcake” (Rs 100) a large generous plastic glass with fillings and base and icing and topping. And this was the best here. We met regulars Safa Mansoor and Huma Ansari who come all the way from town. The desserts in a jar as well as the rainbow cake are unique but a bit too sweet for us.
