Bohri Caterers
For me, it’s a gloriously rich delicious symbol of life. I refer to the larger than life Bohri thaal. It reinforces the humane qualities of sharing, of equality as eight people eat together out of one huge thaal.

It also reminds me that life alternates between sweet and savory and so serves dishes accordingly. I love the ritual of
beginning each meal with a sweet dish (after having had a pinch of salt) and then eating and bonding together for hours.
Where better to do this than in the seafacing bungalow of the Lokhandwalas where the annual Bohri thaal dinner for over a hundred guests is legendary? The dynamic young Moiz Lokhandwala of the prestigious South Mumbai developer family well-known for it’s contemporary luxurious buildings is joined by the renowned architect Hafeez Contractor. Not only has Hafeez been brilliantly masterminding Moiz’s luxurious buildings but also believes in creating and
increasing housing stock to make housing affordable.
However, both share a common passion for perfection and Bohri food. On this rainy Sunday ( thanks to my ever helpful friends Raashid Hakim, Safdar Bandukwala, Taha Nabee) I sniffed out and got together food from four caterers (two home kitchens) and share the yummy info with you.
DOLLY’S
Colaba based seventy year young Dolly Fatehi has been cooking up plenty of flavorsome dishes for several decades.
Ask for her range of authentic Bohri food. Bohri Biryani, Khichda, Raan, Paya and the Parsi Patia (with prawn too), Dhansak, Prawn/Chicken/Fish Pulao are in her repertoire too. As is White Biryani made from Kaju and Badam, I Nalli Gosht, brain cutlets and Haleem.

Saiffudin Bhol’s Nagpada catering outfit has been in demand for big bashes over four decades and now his young MBA educated son Saleh has joined in. They continue to specialize in Bohri thaals …Biryani, fried chicken, tikkas, tuwar pulao paleeda, Raan, kapadvanji seekh, khichda and white biryani are their specialties. As are Desserts like pineapple heaven (served in a scooped out pineapple) and more. Saleh’s wife Alifea, a nutritionist can also ensure low cal and healthy meals.

KINGS KITCHEN CATERERS
Four years ago, entrepreneurial management graduate Abbas Ali set up Kings Kitchen out of devotion and passion for food. While he caters all kinds of cuisines, his Bohri food is worth checking out. Patveliya (arvi leaves) boneless mutton, tikkas made only out of chicken leg, haleem, mutton kesar biryani, tangy dalcha and dal chawal paleeda, six types of tikkas, malida are his specialties. An interesting olive oil based Arabic Touk biryani and lychee mousse were
some other dishes we enjoyed.

Farida cooks out of her Bandra home and so the maximum you can order is for seventy people.She needs two days’ notice (Tiffin service is also provided for Bandra) and sells by the kilo. We tried lagan seekh, shammi kabab, samosas, her Mutton Khichda, Dum Bohri Biryani
